  • EU Roma Projects Conference in Brussels 10-11 March. The Directorate-General for Education and Culture is organising this conference to discuss the involvement and impact of EU programmes with the Roma minority. It is based on a selection of best examples of projects related to the Roma people all funded through various European Commission programmes. In parallel to the conference a seminar of experts on Roma culture is taking place and also an exhibition of 21 interesting and successful projects.

  • NHS Newham Conference: World Class Commissioning in an Age of Migration. Date: Tuesday 16 March 2010, 9.30am – 4.30pm. Venue: West Ham Football Club, London E13. The people of migrant communities in England face widespread difficulties when seeking access to health services. Newham’s population includes some of the poorest, most ethnically diverse and mobile groups in the UK. Due to extensive demand, the Skills for Life Support Programme (SfLSP) will be running more briefing sessions for providers on ‘The New Approach to ESOL’.   • “Norfolk United”: Debating Race Equality. Date: 11 February 2010, 19:00 – 20:00. Venue: The Council Chamber, Norwich City Hall. The Runnymede Trust, in association with the Norwich and Norfolk Racial Equality Council, is delighted to invite you to attend a “Question Time” style debate with local MPs and race equality experts. The event provides an excellent opportunity to quiz politicians from all the major parties such as former Home Secretary Charles Clarke MP, Conservative MP Keith Simpson and Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb on how race equality can be achieved in Norfolk and across the UK. The three local MPs will be joined at the event by community activist Dr Chris Michel, Chair of the Norfolk-based Caribbean and African Network (CAN).   • Mother tongue or non-native language? Working effectively across languages in frontline services. Date: 9 February 2010. Venue: The King’s Fund, Central London. This seminar is for frontline workers, managers and commissioners on effective ways of communicating across languages. It will explore how clients respond to their mother tongue and to second languages, and the factors which influence which language they choose to be heard in.   • Migration, Racism and Religion Conference. Date: 4 February 2010. Venue: University of East London. A conference on faith organisations, sanctuary and civil society, organised by Runnymede Trust and the Centre for Research on Migration, Refugees and Belonging (CMRB) The conference will bring together activists, academics and race equality groups, as they consider the increasingly prominent role of religious organisations in supporting refugees and battling racism.   • Journeys and Justice: Forced migration, seeking asylum, and human rightsDate: 29 January 2010. Venue: University of Leeds. This conference will examine the journeys of forced migrants. It will explore these journeys through the lenses of justice and human rights. A key part of the conference will be to debate better solutions to the problems of injustice and human rights denial that so often taint the journeys of forced migrants.   • The Reach in refugee housing and volunteering training project in Norfolk. This is a scheme offering volunteer work placements and training to refugees who are interested in working in housing. The scheme is organised by the Housing Associations Charitable Trust. The Norfolk Supporting People team are working with HACT in London to bring the training scheme which has already been run in other parts of the country, to Norfolk. Supporting People are currently working with housing organisations to establish 2-3 placements for early 2010.

  • British Red Cross - Community Based First Aid (CBFA). Formal first aid training is very structured and standardised, CBFA offers a more tailored service; e.g. by breaking the sessions down and focussing on what the group needs to learn. There is no specific target group as such it can be anyone from teenage parents, children with learning/behavioural difficulties, or migrants to the UK. Group sizes: between 6-12.   • Free training for Polish and Portuguese native speakers who provide support to their communities in the East of England. As part of a grant from The Big Lottery, we are looking to train 10 native Polish or Portuguese speaking support personnel for free in the use of The SOUL Record. At a one day training course people will be given an English and Polish or Portuguese version of The SOUL Record to take away and utilise; they will then be asked to identify any cultural differences or difficulties that may occur as a result of the translation. The documents will then be finalised and they will be given the first prints of the fully translated Portuguese or Polish SOUL Record which is theirs to use and keep. The Refugee Integration and Employment Service of Refugee Council for Eastern Region is looking for volunteers and Mentors to help new refugees integrate into the locality. You will be helping paid advisors, or working one to one, to enable clients to find somewhere to live, somewhere to learn, with a particular emphasis on somewhere to work.
