- JOBS: Census work in throughout the region, part time and full time, temporary –The Office for National Statistics would welcome applicants to these posts from all members of the community, so that their data collectors are representative of the community they live in, enabling the census data to be as complete as possible, as this will impact on the future funding of services within each local authority. Recruitment for the posts above will start in September and run through to November. Further posts will be recruited through to January 2011.
- Norfolk 2010 Black history Month launch event, 1 October, Norwich. The theme for Black History Month 2010 is Black Role Models. The event will celebrate and recognise the achievements of positive Black Role Models, locally, regionally and nationally. The launch event will take place on Friday 1 October from 6pm to 8pm in the Council Chamber, Norwich City Hall, Norwich NR2 1NH. - Chelmsford Black History Month launch event, 3 October, Chelmsford. The event will be taking place on Chelmsford High Street, from 12 noon to 4pm and will include stage performances by local artists, ethnic and food stalls, henna tattooing, jewellery making and hair braiding.
- A talk by Helena Kennedy QC. Date: 26 October, 7.30pm. Venue: The Assembly House Norwich.The Norwich group of Amnesty International is hosting a talk by Helena Kennedy QC on the subject of: ‘Whatever challenges we face in the modern world, the sacrifice of civil liberties and rights is a folly -Terrorism and the Democratic State’. - Sunday International Friendship Club – Norwich, starting 12 September. This new venture is open to all who want to meet people and learn about where they live. It provides an opportunity for engagement in a place where everyone can feel at home. Anyone, regardless of nationality, race or age, is invited to join in with other local community members for some social networking at Norwich’s International Community Engagement (NICE) Centre. Free drinks and snacks will be provided. The club will be meeting every Sunday starting on 12 September, from 5.30-10pm, at the NICE Centre , 19 Muspole Street, Norwich, NR3 IDJ. - ‘Communities Together’ event in aid of the Pakistan emergency floods appeal. Date: Sunday 12 September, 2pm-5pm. Venue: Suffolk County Council, Endeavour House, Ipswich. - The Big Society. Date: 22 September 2010, 9:30 – 15:00. Venue: Pitt Building in Cambridge. The Government’s plan to promote a ‘Big Society’ is an important initiative; inspirational local leadership and community action are essential to enable us to live sustainably within environmental limits. This free event will help address issues and identify opportunities to take forward the ‘Big Society’ in the East of England. The results of the discussion will help inform a shared ‘manifesto’ to help decision makers implement the concept in a way that contributes to sustainable development. - Managing Migration in the UK: Tackling the Challenges for Border Security, the Economy and Our Society. Date: 16 November 2010 - 8:30 - 16:30. This event will give stakeholders the opportunity to discuss the future challenges facing the immigration system and border security teams. Sessions will focus on the impact of the coalition government’s immigration policy and consider the human rights and legal issues surrounding migration.
- Health Support Officer - Strategic Migration Partnership. Salary range (SCP 29 – 34) £24,646 - £28,636 pro rata. 11 hours per week, home based with some regional travel. One year contract (maternity cover). The post is for someone who can provide expert support for the Strategic Migration Partnership and key regional partners on health issues relating to asylum seekers, refugees and migrant workers. - Amnesty International - Researcher/Adviser on migrants' rights £38,975 + benefits. Fixed term contract of one year in duration. London or another agreed suitable location. Amnesty International is advertising the post of Researcher/Adviser on Refugee and Migrants' Rights. As an adviser in the Refugee and Migrants’ rights team, the post holder will help shape Amnesty International’s work on migrants’ rights and will conduct research and develop Amnesty International’s (AI) policy positions on migrants’ rights issues including criminalization, detention and exploitative labour practices. The successful candidate will provide authoritative legal and policy thematic advice to country and thematic specialists in the International Secretariat, sections and structures and will also carry out related advocacy work and will be expected to do some work on refugee issues, as required by the team. - Practical help for solving migrant housing needs. Date: 17 September. Venue: EELGA offices, Flempton, Bury St Edmunds. A free half day event provided by the Strategic Migration Partnership for the East of England. A range of specialist speakers from the Shelter, the Police and Environmental Health will deliver material in workshop formats, looking at: (i) The impact of multi-lingual PCSOs, (ii) How early interventions work when looking at issues of environmental health in houses in multiple occupation; (iii) What housing rights do migrants and their dependents have? If you work somewhere which has seen an increase in enquiries from foreign nationals and are looking for ways to provide sustainable solutions to their needs, then you should come to this conference to learn more.
- Cambridgeshire consult on the future of their library service : public events throughout September. Cambridgeshire County Council wants to maintain library services, but is charged to meet National Government’s target of cutting £2 million (almost 30%) from the Library Service budget over the next 3 years. They want to protect front-line services by transforming how things are done and to listen to communities to see what they think and what facilities they want. However, making the required savings will lead to some reductions. There will be public consultation events throughout September and library users in Cambridgeshire are invited to attend to explain which services they feel are essential and which are not. The consultation ends on 30 September. - The Sojourner Project Training, for women with no recourse to public funds experiencing domestic violence. Date: 29 September 2010. Venue: Ipswich. Eaves, in conjunction with Southall Black Sisters and Zimbabwe Women’s Resource centre are offering training covering No Recourse to Public Funds, the Domestic Violence Rule and Legal Issues and The Sojourner Project process. - Bedfordshire Refugee & Asylum Seeker Support (BRASS) AGM. Date: 29 September beginning at 12 with refreshments.. Venue: Bedford. St Andrews Church Centre, Kimbolton Road, Bedford, The AGM starts at 1pm and is followed by ‘Sanctuary’, with Cassandra Howes, who helped set up the Bristol Cityof Sanctuary, will speak about this movement – which aims to build a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary in the UK. - Faith-based humanitarianism : workshop, 22 September, Oxford. The response of faith communities and faith-based organisations in contexts of forced migration, hosted by the Oxford University Refugee Studies Centre. Speakers will explore: (i) The responses of faith communities and faith-based organisations to people affected by conflict, crisis and forced migration; (ii) Faith, religion and humanitarianism: bridging the gap or maintaining distinction between religious and humanitarian affairs? (iii) “Using” faith, religiosity and spirituality: practical and psychosocial strategies in the lives of people affected by crisis, conflict and forced migration (Case-studies from the UK, Kenya, Syria and Algeria); (iv) Narratives of practice: views from the global south & north - case-studies from Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand/Burma, Egypt, USA, Australia and UK.
- Advocating intelligent commissioning - training, 22 September, Cambridge. Anyone who works for a local support and development organisation in the East of England and supports local organisations involved in service delivery/work with a local authority or primary care trust on commissioning and who wants to advocate intelligent commissioning in order to achieve better services, should attend this course. - JOBS: Bilingual Classroom Assistants/School Based Interpreters – Hertfordshire schools. £9.13 per hour. Hertfordshire County Council is currently looking for candidates who are fluent in both written and spoken English and a second language, who are available to work up to 25 hours per week assisting in schools. These roles will be supporting the learning of children whose first language is not English. Successful candidates will be based within schools and will be working on a one-to-one basis with children. Ideally candidates should have their own transport and be willing to travel around Hertfordshire. These positions are term time only and are subject to an enhanced CRB disclosure. - Bedfordshire refugee and asylum seeker support (BRASS) : Volunteering opportunities. BRASS have established a mentoring project to provide one-to-one English tuition to their clients. They currently have 3 tutors and 4 more who hope to start soon. There are a large number of unaccompanied under-18 asylum seekers in need of help with English. - Medical Justice report: “State sponsored cruelty: the immigration detention of children” Date: 9 September, 4-6pm. Venue: House of Commons, London. Committee room 10, House of Commons. Report launch hosted by Jeremy Corbyn MP and Julian Huppert MP from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees. The launch will include speakers from UKBA, a child psychiatrist, the report’s author, Jon Burnett and a former detainee from Yarl’s Wood. ‘State sponsored cruelty’: the immigration detention of children’ presents findings of the first large scale investigation in the UK into the physical and psychological harms consolidated by and/or caused by the administrative detention of children.
- City of Sanctuary National Conference. Date: 13 September 2010, 10.30-4pm. Venue: Birmingham City Centre. Discover how communities across the UK are becoming Towns and Cities of Sanctuary and share the experience of working to build a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary. This year’s national conference will feature stories from City of Sanctuary initiatives across the UK, including Swansea, which has recently become Wales’ first official City of Sanctuary. Speakers will explore ways of creating ‘Universities of Sanctuary’ to open up higher education for people seeking sanctuary. - Excellence in equality & diversity: can housing providers improve their service? Date: 8 October 2010. Venue: Cambridge. An event run jointly between CIH Eastern Region & the Equality & Human Rights Commission. - Norwich International Community Engagement (NICE) Centre opens. The new centre will officially open on 26 July 2010. It is at 19 Muspole Street, Norwich NR3 1DJ, and is run by Bridge Plus. The venue will be available for other organisations to use to access BME communities, to do consultations, outreach work, training and other events and activities. - Consultation by the Migration Advisory Committee on the level of an annual limit on economic migration to the UK - regional event in the East of England. Date: 17 August 2010. Venue: EELGA, Flempton House, Bury St Edmunds. The Migration Advisory Committee is currently consulting on the level that the first year limit on non-EEA immigrants coming to the UK for work should be set at. To gather feedback from the region, the Strategic Migration Partnership is facilitating a consultation event primarily aimed at all those who employ migrants, but MAC would welcome responses to the questions in the linked document below from anybody with relevant experience of migration issues. - Consultation event on the level of an annual limit on economic migration to the UK in London. Date: 6 Aug 2010; 13:00 - 15:00 or 13 Aug 2010; 13:00 – 15:00. Venue: Home Office, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF. On 28 June the Government launched a consultation on the limits of non-EU economic migration through Tiers 1 and 2 of the Points Based System. It is consulting on how limits should be implemented, including the mechanism for doing so. At the same time, the Government commissioned the MAC to provide advice on the levels at which limits should be set for the first full year of their operation, and in doing so, to consider the social and public service impacts of migration, as well as the economic impacts. - Operation Black Vote seminar – becoming a magistrate. Date: 21 August 2010. Venue: East London. A free one day seminar entitled, ‘A Judiciary for All’ is being organised by Operation Black Vote. - IAS Conference : The New Immigration Agenda. Date: 21 July 2010, Venue: London South Bank University. - “Making Migration Work for All in London” conference. Migrants’ Rights Network, Date: 23 June 2010, 6pm. At this conference Migrants’ Rights Network will be launching a new report, providing an overview of immigration in London and looking at some of the challenges that immigration brings and the public sector and civil society responses to these challenges. - Free training for Polish and Portuguese native speakers who provide support to their communities in the East of England. As part of a grant from The Big Lottery, we are looking to train 10 native Polish or Portuguese speaking support personnel for free in the use of The SOUL Record. At a one day training course people will be given an English and Polish or Portuguese version of The SOUL Record to take away and utilise; they will then be asked to identify any cultural differences or difficulties that may occur as a result of the translation. The documents will then be finalised and they will be given the first prints of the fully translated Portuguese or Polish SOUL Record which is theirs to use and keep.
